Google claims desktops may become redundant within the next three years

old-desktop-on-the-way-outThe desktop will soon be a relic of the past. At least that’s what Google vice-president of Global Ad Operations John Herlihy seems to believe. This startling and bold prediction came during his speech at the Digital Landscapes conference in Dublin.

According to a report by Irish tech news service SiliconRepublic.com, he said,” In three years time, desktops will be irrelevant. In Japan, most research is done today on smart phones, not PCs.” These are the very same views expressed by Google CEO Eric Schmidt himself, who announced last month that the search giant is focusing on mobile, not desktop, search, and urged application developers to do the same.

Mobile Devices To Shake Things Up In The Search Market

future-of-mobile-searchMore and more people around the world (especially the West) are switching from PC’s and laptops to mobile phones and PDA’s as their preferred medium of internet access. It’s a logical progression considering that handheld devices are becoming more and more powerful and will one day replace desktop devices all together. This is the reason that search biggies like Google, Yahoo and Bing are slugging it out for a bigger slice of the search market pie.

Google has already proved that it is the undisputed champion of the mobile search arena. This dominance may remain unchallenged for quite some time. But, with smartphone companies striking exclusive deals with search providers, the competition has already begun snapping at its heals.

Google Is the Undisputed Champion of the Mobile Search Arena

Google delivers a left hook to Yahoo and a knock-out punch to Bing.

google mobile search leaderWe all know that Google still remains the leader when it comes to traditional search market. However, they seemed to have conquered the mobile search domain as well.

In the recently published Opera State of the Mobile Report, Google now accounts for 9% (US figures) of all the page views on the mobile web domain.

Its nearest rival, Yahoo accounts for just 4.3%, which is a respectable figure, but still nowhere close to the competition.

Then there’s Bing. Opera had to place an extra decimal point to the right in order to quantify Bing’s market share, which stands at a lowly 0.03% Read more

Number of new registrations on Twitter down, number of tweets on the rise

Twitter Registration in November

Twitter Tweets November

November’s numbers paint a similar picture. Matthew Daines, the lead developer of Twellow, has shared a couple of new graphs for last month.
